Waihi Gold granted prospecting permit over area around Thames
24 August 2006 - Waihi Gold Company Ltd has been awarded a prospecting permit around the town of Thames in the southwest of the Coromandel Peninsula.
The permit (PP 39307) covers an area of 368 sq km from 15-20km inland down to Thames coast including to the north and south of the town.
The work programme for the two year permit calls for a programme of reconnaissance geological mapping and geochemical sampling and geophysical surveying.
Waihi Gold is currently carrying out an extensive exploration programme over a number of permits in and around Waihi and southern Coromandel Ranges vicinity.
Gold was first found in the Thames area in 1867 and a gold rush began which saw a number of quartz reefs discovered in the Thames foothills.
