L&M Petroleum finds 7 m of coal with high gas potential at Mt Linton-2

10 September 2006 - L&M Petroleum has encountered 6.8 metres of Beaumont Formation coal in its Mt Linton-2 coal seam gas well in western Southland just west of Ohai.

The Mt Linton-2 well in PEP 38226 (Waiau) was suspended pending future flow testing of the coal seam encountered in the well from 359 m.

Cores recovered from the well showed evidence of high gas content. The cores have been sent to CRL in Christchurch to undergo full laboratory analysis.

Once logging operations have been completed, the Mt Linton-2 wellbore will be suspended pending installation of the necessary equipment to undertake long term flow testing to establish the permeability and flow characteristics of the Eocene-aged Beaumont coals in the Mt Linton area.

Mt Linton-2 well was drilled near Mt Linton-1 well, which was plugged and abandoned after a well cave-in.

L&M Petroleum has since drilled the Belmont Strat-1 well to complete the first half of its 2009 western Southland coal seam gas exploration programme.

The Belmont stratigraphic well, to further appraise the extent of the Beaumont Formation coals in the northern portion of the Takitimu South trend, was successfully logged. Coring operations recovered 1.2 m of Beaumont coals from the well which will be tested for coal character and gas content.

Up to four additional coal seam gas test wells will be drilled in the remainder of 2009 in Western Southland.

One of the first wells Meadow Creek-1, is programmed to undergo DST flow tests to ascertain the permeability and flow characteristics of the Beaumont formation coals.
