A region of over 30,000 sq km on and offshore the West Coast of the South Island.
Geology
Up to 7 km of Cretaceous to Quaternary fill in several basins, with up to 3 km of rift sediments in South Westland, onshore and offshore.
Wells drilled
Several onshore wells drilled, mainly in Westland Basin. Four offshore wells drilled on rift horsts.
Industry infrastructure
Ports at Greymouth and Westport.
Prospects
Numerous oil seeps and oil and gas shows in onshore wells. Potential for giant structures offshore of South Westland.
Potential source rocks
Cretaceous to Eocene coal measures, possible late Eocene marine mudstones.
Potential reservoir rocks
Cretaceous to Eocene sandstones, fractured Oligocene limestones and Miocene turbidite sandstones.
